Some people are wondering why FreshDirect is partnering with the city and state to build a state-of-the-art facility in the Bronx and want to know about the incentives program we are utilizing.

FreshDirect has been a huge contributor to New York’s economy for about a decade now, and we plan to be for many years to come. If you look at payrolls and purchasing history, FreshDirect has generated approximately $1 billion in economic activity in the state over the last ten years.

Our goal is to continue to grow and create jobs, right here in New York. The incentives program is a part of that effort to maintain a strong partnership between FreshDirect and the city. Along the way, we’ll add as many as 1,000 new jobs, building on our current workforce of 2,200.

As Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said, this:

collaboration will result in a rich environment” for FreshDirect, “our residents and the other Bronx businesses that are anxious to provide their growing customer base with additional products made in our Borough."

And as Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Borough President Diaz wrote in a recent piece in the Daily News:

Small businesses are the backbone of our city; when they grow, we want them to grow here in the five boroughs – not in the suburbs or in another state. … Job creation is our No. 1 priority, and the expansion of Fresh Direct in the South Bronx will benefit local residents and all New Yorkers for decades to come.”

It’s important to remember that this is a long, multi-step process that involves the approval of several city and state entities. But we are working hard to ensure this new facility will be a success and are optimistic of its approval.
