NEW YORK – Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday gave approval for FreshDirect’s plans to build a state-of-the-art 500,000-square-foot facility at the Harlem River Yard in the South Bronx, paving the way for the company to bring thousands of good jobs to the area.

“With the support of local civic groups, the Bronx Community Board 1, the City Planning Commission, NYCIDA, and now Mayor Bloomberg, we are on the verge of bringing thousands of good jobs to the South Bronx,” said FreshDirect Co-Founder and CEO Jason Ackerman. “We are excited to enter the next phase in making the Bronx our new home and look forward to continuing to work with the local community as the process moves forward.”

Specifically, the Mayor approved FreshDirect’s slight modification to the original Harlem River Yard development plan from 1995, which requires sign-off from the City Planning Commission and the Mayor’s office. Bronx Community Board 1 voted 25-4 to support the modification as well.

FreshDirect is anticipating starting construction on the new facility in Spring 2014, with an expected completion in 2016.

Last year, FreshDirect announced a partnership with Governor Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg, and Borough President Diaz to invest $112.6 million to build a new headquarters at Harlem River Yard.

The move will enable FreshDirect to create up to 1,000 new jobs over the next ten years – at least one-third of which it has pledged will go to Bronx residents – in addition to its current workforce of over 2,400-members.  Additionally, the construction of the new headquarters will create approximately 684 construction jobs.

As part of its plan to be environmentally responsible, FreshDirect is also in the process of transitioning to a 100 percent green transportation fleet.
